Glad you mentioned the Noir. That doesn't get said enough, and when talking about the games' architecture, it slips my mind. The Third Man and The Maltese Falcon were strong influences, and Philip Marlowe, of course, stirred in with The Name of the Rose, and on, and on...
Oh... So instead of looking to Marlowe and Noir for a look at that kind of detective, we are getting more Batman's detective, and the time-slowing brain of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes' detective.

70 signatures short of 1000.

Russell IS Garrett. Always will be.
The voice DOES matter. It defined the character.
But judging from the trailer, the new guy sounds quite close to the original. Not the same. Not an imitation. But his delivery seems to be hitting similar beats, or at least attempting it.
Therefore I'll reserve my judgement for the final game, thank you very much.
That is all.

I kinda wish they'd pitch his voice down a semitone or two, just to get it near Garrett's voice more, but I know they wouldn't do that, plus it's disrespectful to Romano.

Stephen Russell has a much richer, articulate voice...with a more complex resonance. Technically, he has superior voice control to that of Romano, making him a more valued and talented vocal artist, regardless of past nostalgia.

Not only is SR's voice deeper and richer, he never sounded as though he was reading from a script. Russell was always able to convey a multitude of emotions with his voice; imo (key phrase here), the new Garrett sounds way too wooden and rehearsed. I'm sorry, and no offense to Mr. Romano, but if we're comparing SR's Garrett to the new Garrett, in the T4 video it almost sounded like Garrett on helium. At least to my ears.
I still think if EM wasn't going to hire SR they should've at least asked Sly.

Petitions and angry voices are ridiculous, and any creative entity should never bow down to complaints.
*cough, cough, Ultima IX, cough, cough, Mass Effect 3's ending, cough* :p ;)
And I say that as someone who also likes Romano's performance (the little I've heard of it so far), except for his weird pronunciation of "opportunity" and "preparation". :weird: The guy needs more practice. Maybe his VO for the trailer was rushed, hence some degree of insecurity in it. :erg: :(

Maybe the first few Thief games where Stephen Russell played the voice of Garrett, that was Garrett's real voice. Maybe in Thief 4 Garrett has to mask his voice when he speaks because he does not want anyone to know that he is the guy who lives in the clocktower. I mean in bright daylight, Garrett still has to buy his groceries or go out for a drink at the bar.
Just like Batman, Garrett has to mask his voice as shown in Thief 4 to conceal his identity! :cheeky:

I was outraged, boiling mad when I found out Stephen Russell wouldn't be voicing Garrett. Now my feelings about that are undergoing a strange metamorphosis. This isn't our Garrett. This isn't our City. I wish it were, but it's not. In a World that has something as bizarre as the Maw, why not some plane of existence that's slightly askew from the Thief world we know? That appeals to my imagination more than the thought that our Thief world has been supplanted by this new one. Yes, I know, that's strained rationalization, but it makes me better able to tolerate what's being done to our beloved Thief. It might even allow me to enjoy the new game.

Yes, tricksie yourself into making it purchaseable. This is not my beautiful city, this is not my beautiful wife!
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was.
Careful with that wallet, Eugene.
