UPDATE: April 11, 2013 - Stephen Russell responds to Dia!Quote Posted by Dia
Well Taffers, I just checked my e-mail and sure enough, Mr. Russell had responded to my (our) posts on the W.H.A.T. FB page. Here goes:
Dear Dia,
Thanks so much for getting in touch and for letting me know about all the posts at TTLG and the petition. I've been aware of some of this but, nevertheless, I am truly overwhelmed and astonished by the appreciation so many people have shown. I have been meaning to write something on the forum to thank all those who have taken the time to post and I hope to get to that later today. The fact that people all over the world have responded so positively to the work I was fortunate enough to be able to do means the world to me. Creating Garrett's voice (and Benny and Karras) and working closely with the incredibly talented and encouraging audio team at Looking Glass, particularly those geniuses Eric Brosius and Kemal Amarasingham, was one of the highlights of my life and I'm extremely grateful to them for the opportunity. I'm also more grateful than I can ever express that so many fans responded so enthusiastically over the years and continue to do so even now. I hope you do get a chance to visit WHAT this Summer and that you get to see one of the productions. I think you'll like what you see.
If I could ask a favor of a stranger, I would really appreciate it if you would not share this email address. Maybe it's the lingering Garrett in me, but I've always preferred to keep a low profile.
Thanks a million, Dia, and all best wishes to you.
Stephen RussellMy day is complete. Just wish I could sign that petition again. And again.
;)
UPDATE: April 11, 2013 - Stephen Russell replies to the TTLG community on this thread!Quote Posted by StephenR
To all of you who have taken the time to post here and elsewhere over the last few days, I wanted to finally come out from the shadows and express to you how truly overwhelmed and astonished I am by the appreciation so many people have shown. Anyone who's been involved in the performing arts for any length of time knows full well the vagaries of the business, that there will be good times and there will be not so good times and one always hopes that the former will outweigh the latter. I consider myself very fortunate that I'm still working and enjoying what I'm doing even if the winds have change have once again brought new directions.
With sincere thanks and all best wishes.

Uncensored "Thank You Notes" to Stephen Russell - Write a letter, he would love to hear from you!Quote Posted by fett
I don't think there's ever a bad time to say thanks, and it's waaaaay overdue for me. I wanted to share this here as well because SR's voice has meant so much to me:
Mr. Russell,
I can't adequately express how much I've appreciated your characterization of Garrett throughout the Thief series. I discovered the games at a very low point in my life (I had just been diagnosed with a fatal heart disease). I escaped into the Thief universe for some time and though it may sound silly, feeling like I could "become" Garrett for even a short period of time helped me to cope with my real life struggles. That would have never happened if you had not done such a great job at making me believe I was truly a professional Thief - able to rise above the circumstances and master my own destiny. I return to the games today for a bit of that escapism and the voice of Garrett warms my heart like an old friend. I'm not a fanatical "gamer" per se, but Thief and Garrett have become an important part of my own story, and I've been excited to introduce the master thief to my children and friends throughout the years. It wouldn't have meant as much without your characterization, and for all this I will be eternally grateful. Your work has helped me in such a tangible way, and I just wanted to let you know and say thank you. I hope events change course and you will be able to continue voicing this character who looms so large in the imagination and wonder of so many fans.

Taffer for LifeQuote Posted by New Horizon
I can relate to your experience Dave. I came into Thief at an extremely low point in life too. I had been unemployed for a couple of years, living off my parents hand outs and subsidized by my then girlfriend. I had been wanting to get into some sound recording at an affordable price and Mary being the saint she is loaned me the money to buy the Soundblaster Live Platinum package. Well, the games sat on my shelf for months as I was too depressed to even install them. At this point I was up all night and sleeping all day, just a mess. One night, I fired up Thief and for the first time in years I was transported out of my personal hell into a world where I could lose myself for the night. I would spend hours exploring levels each night. In a strange way it pulled me out of my descent and Mr. Russell's characterization of Garrett sure played a huge role in that.
The series means a lot to me and I think it touched a lot of fans in the same way...a way I don't think the developers realize with their casual elimination and generalizing of Thief's style and flavor. They get it on a basic level, that the game is about stealth and stealing but they miss the far more nuanced details. When I look at T4, I see a game that is developed by a truly talented group but they're locked into the visual flog fest of modern gaming. If they were allowed to and perhaps even if they had been teamed up with some of the guiding members of Thief, they could have made a truly astounding Thief game.

I wonder how many of us have similar stories to fett & New Horizon. For me it was being diagnosed with MS days after my 30th b-day. I spent many nights exploring the City until the wee morning hours because I could forget about the MonSter inside of me destroying my brain. Besides, it beat waking up in tears again, because I'd had that dream where there is a cure for MS, but I can't have it for one of a myriad of dumb reasons. Just hearing Stephen Russell voicing Garrett is a calming influence for me. Having the ability to "become" Garrett due to the degree of immersion possible in the Thief games helped me retain my sanity as my health got progressively worse. It provided a place where I could walk, run, climb, steal & pretend I was OK. Then I took a turn for the worse & could not play Thief at all due to hand control issues. Let me say that I missed Garrett the way I'd miss a friend who died even though it was really a part of ME that was gone. I am still struggling to retrain myself, but hearing the voice of Garrett makes me feel like I can do it. Maybe this seems silly to some, but, when your mind is fractured, you grab for anything that can help. I guess Garrett has been my mental super glue.

Mr. Russell, I hadn't been satisfied by most video gaming experiences for 10 years, prior to Thief II: The Metal Age coming to me through a friend's new computer and stack of free discs. By the time I had finished that game, and before I knew you had also voiced Dumb Guard/Benny, Hammerites, Karras, the wimpy servant, and other townspeople, I was blown away by what you had been able to do with the material you were given. I was laughing, scared, feeling sympathy and empathy, and not wanting that world and characters to come to an end, and so, of course, I went seeking the original title, and found an online forum where I've met (online, anyway) some really great individuals who also love the Thief games and your work. Heh, many of us purchased multiple copies of the games back then, hoping for more Thief titles, and hoping some of the proceeds would get to you and the fine folks at Looking Glass, even if we were incorrect in our assumption. We haven't known a better way to thank you for the embarrassment of rich endless entertainment from your work on these games, but we always smile to hear your characterizations. They just resonate and never get old. You played a huge part, pun intended, in making the Thief video game series timeless, which is a rarity in an industry where the tech grows obsolete so fast. Thank you, Sir. We hope to hear more from you in a new Thief game someday.
Jason T. Reimche, Flagstaff, Arizona.

Thanks so much Stephen. I found Thief in 1998 and have been a huge fan of your work ever since. Caught your film work too. It warms my heart to know you have heard our messages! We will be listening for you and hope our passion will inform Eidos Montreal to change their direction and call your voice back to inhabit the body of Garrett. :) We love ya man!

Dear Mr.Russell,
your priceless performance created characters that will stay with me for a long time, expecially Garrett. For me YOU ARE Garrett and nobody, no matter how skilled, will be able to take your place. I was shocked and sadden by the news that you will not be giving the voice to the new Garrett, but I really hope to hear more of you, if not in Thief then somewhere else. I've been playing games for almost 30 years but I have never seen another character so strongly linked to his voice actor, an actor able to infuse life into a shapeless form and convince countless people that that invisible video game avatar was almost a living person, with complex personality and refined taste.
thank you

Gah! What were they thinking!?!
I guess if there's a point to being creative, it's so that we get the chance to begin to understand how something might look from someone else's point of view. To make a down-payment against what Obama called the empathy deficit. It's hardly trivial stuff. So truth be to told I was looking forward to you reprising the role of Garrett maybe a little older and more sage than before and I was sorely disappointed that we'll get to miss out, not just on your voice acting (which has always been immensely enjoyable by the way) but also the opportunity for people to play someone other than generic action hero age ~ an older, sager kind of someone.
That probably came out wrong. Not that you're old of course :/
Oh well. Here's hoping film, theatre and voice work for all manner of other things keeps you busy at least until the next Thief. And here's hoping that in the mean time video games have learned that all sorts of characters, not just generic gritty action heroes, make for fascinating protagonists.
That probably came out wrong. Not that I doubt you can do a fine generic gritty action hero :/
Thanks for the adventures - it won't be the same without you, and all the best for the future.

Stephen, thanks for all your hard work in the past, especially for making the voice of Garrett so unique and memorable. Thank you!

It pleases me to know that even though he won't be voicing Garrett, SR is widely aware of how the fan base views his role in the original series and continued VA roles in the industry.

You are one incredibly talented voice actor, and I must say that the voice of Garrett is perhaps one of my favorite voices of any character ever, matching his personality perfectly.
Thank you for all the adventures we've had in the world of Thief, and thank you for taking the time to respond to us. You are awesome. :)
I hope we'll get a chance to hear you in a Thief game again. If nothing else, perhaps we could all arrange something and make a project of our own, and ask you to give life to one of our favorite characters once again.

Speaking only for myself, I feel that EM's involvement in sending our messages to Mr Russell is a bit awkward given the fact that EM has decided that he should not be part of their Thief. As such, I choose not to contribute as I feel it is in conflict with the pressure we hope to exert on EM via the petition to bring Mr Russell back. Thank you for your offer, but we have successfully got in contact with him ourselves.
Quote Posted by HarlandMcTavish
Yes, a line of communication with him has been established by TTLG members and the thread starter has chosen to transfer the digital message movement there. These messages are an expression of our love for Mr. Russell and his work, but they are not a goodbye by any means. We intend to keep pushing for his return. There is always hope, so long are we remain hopeful and Mr. Russell's positive message to his fans certainly filled us with hope and positive energy. Nothing but love for Mr. Russell.
I too feel EM's involvement is somewhat hypocritical and would prefer not to have this gesture performed by them. Thank you, but the fans will take care of this.

Everyone's going to slobber over your performance as Garrett, and that's perfectly warranted. It's iconic. It's incredible. I'm a huge fan of it, and the series will be lesser for its absence.
For me, though, you completely stole (shameless pun intended) the entire series as Father Karras in Thief II. Those intercom messages in Soulforge Cathedral, as it's clear the man is going completely, slowly, unavoidably insane... absolutely genius. That I've often found myself, in the midst of countless enemies, with 1,000 things I need to do and even more things to worry about within the context of the game... nevertheless standing transfixed, hanging on Karras' every word...? It's a testament to your performance on every level. Enhanced further by how you simply disappeared into the role! I actually shook my head in disbelief when I was informed that the voice of Garrett and Karras were one and the same.
Your incredible voicework has enriched the entire series, no small feat for a game that's so auditorily oriented. By association, it's enriched the lives of the individuals that experienced it. It certainly has with mine, having inspired numerous artistic and creative endeavors.
Thank you from all of us, Stephen Russell.

Thank you so much Stephen, for making Garrett, Karras, Benny and the other characters in the Thief universe come to life; they just wouldn't be the same without your great talent.
It would be a terrible shame if we do not get to hear you bring life to Garrett once again in Eidos Montreal's new version of Thief; for me there will be only one true Garrett and I know many others feel the same way. I sincerely hope we can make them change their decision but no matter what they choose to do I hope we will continue to be blessed with your wonderful performances for many years to come, in future Thief games as well as other works.
Many thanks from your fans in Sweden!

Mr. Russell, (may I call you Stephen, too?), your voice-over work in Thief 1&2&3 is just amazing. Like many of us, I was very surpized when I've read that, in Thief 2, Garrett and Karras were voiced by the same actor, you Stephen. The first my thought was: "It's impossible!" The second one was: "Why not? Just remember how brilliant he works as Garrett and Benny!" I suppose, that's what is called a true acting technique.
Your voice is a diamond, and we all will feel ourselves robbed if Thief 4 will be released without this jewel. I personally join the Dominus' proposal about the voice pack for Thief 4 with you as Garrett. Please don't forget us and visit us anytime you want, because we love you and are always glad to see you here, Stephen.

To StephenR - Thanks for posting here! That was very kind. Your Garrett voice is truly amazing. Incredible, actually. It's a big reason I fell in love with the Thief franchise in the first place. And when I found out years later that you actually voiced multiple characters in Thief, including Benny and Karras?!!, I was floored. Couldn't believe it. Well done, taffer! Well done. You definitely fooled me. I am still deeply saddened that a different voice actor is currently planned for the new Thief. Of all things to be changed for the new game, I definitely wasn't expecting this -- especially with Garrett still being the main character. So, I'm a bit shocked, to say the least. If you won't be coming back as Garrett (and I'm keeping that as a big *if* for now, as I'm holding on to all hope that you will be back), then I hope EM gives you an opportunity to play other characters in the new Thief; and that you will have the time to do so, and that you will still want to. Thanks again for all you've done for the Thief franchise. Time for me to load up Thief II here and enjoy your wonderful voicework again, just as I've done the past 10+ years. Have fun with your theater roles! Take care always, -DarknessFalls

Dear Mr. Russell,
I'd like to wholeheartedly thank you for your captivating voice acting in the Thief series. While I'm pretty sure it would have been an acclaimed game series even without your vocal presence, part of what made its atmosphere so immersive and accessible was your voicework - and not only for Garrett, but also for a large number of very disparate primary and secondary characters. I really appreciate the amount of effort you spent in bringing them to life, giving each a highly distinctive voice and personality. Without your vocal talent, Thief might have been a lot more blander.
I wish you all the best in both your personal life and in your career - whether you'll be acting on stage, in television, or lending your voice to another quality game. Good luck ! ;-)

Dear Garrett-uh, I mean, Mr.Russell,
I'd like to congratulate you first of all on all the fantastic voices you've provided for so many characters in many games, I'm fairly certain that you gained many fans in Skyrim as your voice stands out in contrast to other voices(not to put the other voice actors down, but if you're awesome then you're awesome).
And when it comes to the Thief series: they are yours by now, actually they became yours in the very first game and I thank God that you were in Deadly Shadows since a lot of people thought it to be a debacle - I think you were playing a big part in saving the game, and it is the same case with Thief 4 now. I do hope that they bring you back, it isn't the same game I fell in love with without you.
Needless to say, I became a fan of yours ever since, and so I enjoy watching whatever movies you are featured in and play whatever games you are part of.
I think this sums it up nicely, I'll avoid writing the book I'd like to write to you, but that is the gist of what I have to say, but mainly: I really do pray, hope and wish that they bring you back for Thief 4, if not, then maybe it was best because if the game leaps off the cliff of re-invention and falls to its death then I'd rather that you're not with it. But even then, you'd be a strong hope for it.
I wish you all the best in the future, and hope to hear you in many more games and see you in many more movies!
