Sign me up as another old man yelling at clouds. I watched the whole thing and it was boooooring. Nothing we haven't seen before. It's taken the worst bits of No Man's Sky (pointing lasers at rocks until they break) but not the best bits (actual entire universe to explore). The combat looks like a step up from Fallout 4, but still very humdrum. And honestly I'm not feeling the setting. I don't care about space. Post-apocalyptic earth is much more interesting because you get to see what happened to humanity and how people coped with the change and that's communicated just by looking at the world, but space is like... well this planet is blue and has slime creatures on it and this other planet is rocky and has big bugs. Who cares?
What about space flight tho, you like that, right henke???
I like space trucking in Elite Dangerous. And you know what the most exiting bits of those flights are? The takeoffs and landings. Docking at space stations. I enjoy the challenge of it. I'm like 90% certain that in Starfield that'll be reduced to just pointing your ship at a planet or station, pressing a button, and watching a cutscene. It'll suck.
WOW! I am really down on this game huh? Honesly I'll probably play it as some point and maybe I'll even have a good time! But for now my hype is at 0%.
edit: oh wait it's proc gen? There's a 1000 planets? Ok maybe you do get to land on your own. But it'll probably just be like NMS where you find a somewhat suitable landing spot and the computer tells you if it's ok to land or not and you press a button and the whole thing is done for you. The spaceflight will still probably suck.

I just want someone to make a modern Star Control 2 -- exploration, alien diplomacy, conflicts on galactic scale, all that good space opera stuff.

Oh, I just posted that because Briareos posted that exact statement
only and
repeatedly.

I'm game! I'm a sucker for some new sci-fi immersion that looks better than NMS

That's just PR spin to excuse the fact that their ancient Bethesbryo engine (that they've been using since Morrowind) has to load into every new environment. I'm sure that you've noticed it in their past games, every almost every building interior has to be loaded into.
One of my favourite Skyrim mods was called Open Cities. It made all of the towns/cities a seamless part of the open world map.
Unless MS forces them, or they have a massive talent drain, they're probably going to keep modding the same poo poo engine until the end of time. A. Their veteran coders know it inside and out. B. the modular nature it of makes it a boon for content creators. Eg: You can write a tiny plugin in their Creation Kit to change just a single variable and get it going almost immediately. That's why mods pop up almost immediately for a new release BGS title (long before even the official Creation Kit comes out), the knowledge from previous iterations of the engine largely carries over.
CDPR recently said that going forward they're ditching their proprietary RED engine in favour of industry standard Unreal. They reportedly had a high turn-over rate so using something industry standard will be beneficial. (Also it'll probably be a lot easier to optimise UE. I.e. Optimising RED engine was one of main hurdles of Cyberpunk 2077's failure.)

Yeah, I heard about that. The Digital Foundry guys were bemoaning the dwindling amount of in-house tech these days, but I can understand not wanting to have an engine whose continued functionality rests on a few key people.
As for Gamebryo, I haven't played a Bethesda game since Fallout 4, but I recall that while it looked pretty, it somehow still felt old, like Morrowind with a coat of paint.

The most interesting bit to me was the ship building (20 minutes in).
